The World Economic Forum opened its annual meeting in the Swiss resort of Davos on Sunday, with Russia's invasion of Ukraine at the top of the agenda. It's the first face-to-face gathering in two years after the annual event was canceled last year due to the pandemic. About 2,500 government officials and business leaders from around the world are participating this year. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to deliver a speech online on Monday and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba will take part in face-to-face discussions on Wednesday. The forum has banned all Russians from attending the meeting. World Economic Forum President Borge Brende told NHK that the participants will discuss with Ukrainian leaders how they can contribute to the necessary reconstruction of Ukraine. He expressed hope that the private sector can play a constructive role in the rebuilding work. Other global issues, such as worsening inflation and food shortages, will also be discussed before the event wraps up on Thursday.
