Two killed in Russian shelling of Ukrainian school in Luhansk NHK

Ukraine's public broadcaster says two people were killed when Russian forces shelled a school in the eastern region of Luhansk.

The media outlet reported the news in a video that was released on Saturday showing damage wrought by Russian forces in eastern Ukraine.

It said more than 200 people, including children, were taking shelter at the school in Severodonetsk when it was attacked.

Russia has been intensifying its offensive to fully capture Luhansk and the neighboring region of Donetsk since it declared on Friday that it had taken full control of the eastern city of Mariupol.

The Russian defense ministry said on Sunday that its missile attacks hit command posts, ammunition depots and other sites in Donetsk and Luhansk.

It also claimed that their attacks killed more than 200 Ukrainian soldiers in an area west of Severodonetsk.

The British defense ministry tweeted on Sunday that "the Severodonetsk area remains one of Russia's immediate tactical priorities."

The US Institute for the Study of War also said in its assessment on Saturday that Severodonetsk is "the final Ukrainian strongpoint" in Luhansk. It added Russian troops will likely move to encircle the area.

The governor of Donetsk said on Saturday that a Russian attack had destroyed a music school in Sviatohirsk. The building was renovated with Japanese government support in 2016.

Ukraine's parliament on Sunday approved bills submitted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to extend martial law and general mobilization for another 90 days from Wednesday. They took effect immediately after Russia launched the invasion.

Zelenskyy said in a video address on Saturday that "during the full-scale war, the Russian army has already destroyed 1,873 educational institutions."

Zelenskyy said, "As in previous days, the Russian army is trying to attack Slovyansk and Severodonetsk." But he added Ukrainian forces are "deterring" the offensive.

Zelenskyy expressed readiness to prepare for the possibility of the fighting dragging on. He said, "We still need to fight and move towards victory."
