Chinese foreign minister to visit eight Pacific island nations NHK

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit eight Pacific island countries from Thursday.

The foreign ministry announced the tour at a news conference on Tuesday.

Wang is to visit the Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste in his 10-day trip until June 4.

A ministry spokesperson said China will deepen mutual political trust with the island nations, and contribute to peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region.

Wang's tour is apparently aimed at expanding China's influence in the region and countering a US-led initiative in the Indo-Pacific.

Last month, China and the Solomon Islands signed a security pact. The United States, Australia and others have voiced concern that the agreement could affect the region's security.
