Russia, China announce joint air patrol around Japan NHK

Russia's defense ministry says its air force has conducted a joint patrol with China over the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea, on Tuesday.

Russian-made Tu-95 strategic bombers and at least one Sukhoi-30 fighter jet took part.

Ministry officials said the mission strictly followed international law, and there were no airspace violations. They said the operation, which was conducted in line with a 2022 military cooperation plan, was not aimed to counter any third country.

China's defense ministry also announced on Tuesday that the Chinese and Russian air forces conducted a regular joint military patrol over the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea and the West Pacific.

South Korea's military said Russian and Chinese military jets entered its air defense identification zone near the Takeshima Islands. South Korea controls the islands. Japan claims them.

It says two Chinese bombers entered the zone shortly before 8:00 a.m., and left it about one and half hours later.

It says they joined two Russian fighter jets and two bombers and entered the zone again before 10:00 a.m., and left shortly after.
