Climate, energy and environment ministers from the Group of Seven nations are set to meet in Germany. The focus of their talks will be how much the G7 can reduce its dependence on Russian energy. The meeting will take place in Berlin for two days from Thursday, with a joint statement to be issued on the second day. From Japan, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Hosoda Kenichi and State Minister of Environment Ooka Toshitaka will participate in the meeting. G7 leaders have already agreed to ban or phase out imports of coal and oil from Russia in response to the country's invasion of Ukraine. But they have yet to lay out a specific time frame for doing so. European countries, especially Germany and Italy, rely heavily on Russia for natural gas. Japan also imports a certain amount of gas from the country. Ending coal-fired power generation will also be on the agenda. Five G7 nations, including Britain and Germany, have already announced plans to shut down coal-fired power plants. Japan, a resource-poor nation, will explain its plan to use new technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from coal power plants.
