Shipments of consumer electronics in Japan dropped in April. Analysts say this was largely due to the effects of the coronavirus lockdown measures in Shanghai. The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association says domestic shipments last month totaled about 710 million dollars. This was down 20.4 percent in yen terms from the same month last year. The last time the figure saw an annual decline exceeding 20 percent was in October. That's when the electronics industry was dealing with the effects of a global chip shortage. Association officials say the April dip was due to coronavirus restrictions delaying production of home appliances in Shanghai. Shipments of TVs, digital recorders, and other video devices were down 27 percent. For navigation systems and related products, they fell 16.9 percent. The officials say shipments of auto devices will remain weak in the coming months, due to the prolonged effects of the chip shortage and lockdowns in Shanghai.
