Heavy rain forecast for eastern, northern Japan NHK

Japanese weather officials forecast heavy rain in areas along the Pacific coast in eastern and northern Japan through Saturday.

They have issued a landslide alert for the southern part of the city of Hamamatsu and the city of Kosai in Shizuoka Prefecture.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said developed rain clouds cover the Kanto and Tokai regions on Friday morning.

Unstable atmospheric conditions are expected to continue through Friday in eastern Japan, and through Saturday in northern Japan.

Areas along the Pacific may get more than 50 millimeters per hour of rainfall, and thundershowers are possible in some places.

Rainfalls during the 24-hour period through Saturday morning are expected to be up to 150 millimeters in Hokkaido, 100 millimeters in the Kantokoshin and Tokai regions, and 80 millimeters in the Tohoku region.

Some parts of Hokkaido could get rainfall of 50 to 100 millimeters during the 24-hour period through Sunday morning.

Weather officials are urging people to be on high alert for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and sudden swollen rivers, as well as thunder strikes, gusty winds, and hail.
