Japan is planning to send firefighting gear and telecommunications equipment to the Ukrainian government to assist people involved in rescue operations in the country. This comes amid Russia's invasion.

Russian forces are mounting harsher attacks in eastern Ukraine. Concern is growing that the number of human casualties could increase.

Japan's Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry announced that it will send equipment necessary for rescue operations taking place in areas where battles are being fought. The move is in response to a request from the Ukrainian government.

Japan will send 25 different kinds of items, including about 1,300 sets of firefighter turnout gear, 50 hydraulic jacks, 150 stretchers and 25 satellite mobile phones.

Some of the items were procured from the headquarters of fire departments. Others were provided by private companies.

Shipments are expected to start later this month. UNOPS, a UN body, is going to help. The equipment will be delivered to Ukrainian government officials in Poland.

Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Kaneko Yasushi said Russia's armed attacks have seriously damaged infrastructure in Ukraine. He expressed hope that the items will be of assistance to Ukrainians, as they carry out rescue and firefighting activities.
