Russian attacks continue in Ukraine's east alongside consolidation drive NHK

In Ukraine, the Russian military is stepping up its offensive to take control of the entire eastern province of Luhansk. Russia is also working to solidify its grip on areas it already claims to hold.

Russia's defense ministry said on Friday several of its missiles had hit Ukrainian forces and commando posts. It also said it is ramping up an offensive against Severodonetsk, which is considered the last stronghold of Ukrainian forces in Luhansk. A pro-Russian leader in Luhansk claimed that Russia is now in control of 95 percent of the region.

Local authorities there estimated that some 13,000 people are sheltering underground or in other places outside their homes. They said four people were killed in Russian attacks on Thursday.

The UK defense ministry said on Friday that Russian ground forces are trying to encircle the city, and have occupied several villages to the south amid increasing military pressure.

Moscow appears keen to establish a permanent presence in the areas it claims to control.

According to the Tass news agency, a TV truck is broadcasting Russian state-run news programs in Mariupol. In the southern Kherson region, the ruble is circulating alongside the Ukrainian currency. A pro-Russia separatist leader has said the focus is now on establishing administrative bodies in Kherson and other regions under Russian control.
