Shanghai's strict coronavirus lockdown has reached the two-month mark without completely containing new infections. Residents have been home-bound since March 28. New infections climbed to more than 20,000 on some days in April before starting to decline. The tally on Friday was about 150. Shanghai authorities say life and commerce will return to normal by the end of June. Subway operators partially resumed services this week. However, outing restrictions remain in many parts of the city, with only one person from each household allowed to go out for a few hours on a designated date for shopping and other purposes. The authorities say they will let retailers and restaurant operators reopen their shops in stages. But most stores and eateries remain closed. Under President Xi Jinping, China maintains a zero-COVID policy, meaning they aim to completely contain new infections.
