New coronavirus cases in Shanghai dropped below 100 for the first time in more than 11 weeks on Sunday.

Authorities in Shanghai have announced that residents of low-risk housing compounds will be free to move in and out from June 1.

They plan to resume normal life and business activities and will allow 90 percent of residents --- around 22 million people --- to go outside.

New infections in China's commercial hub had climbed to more than 20,000 on some days in April before starting to decline. The tally on Sunday stood at about 60.

The daily tally in the locked-down city was last below 100 on March 12. That's more than two weeks before the strict lockdown was imposed to contain infections.

Swiftly resuming economic activities may be challenging in a city where residents have been banned from going outdoors freely for two months.

A senior city official who met reporters on Sunday unveiled plans to reduce taxes for qualified enterprises and provide subsidies to those who replace conventional cars with electric models.

The action plan to jump-start the economy includes financial assistance of more than 45 billion dollars.

The official said that factories and businesses, including shopping malls, will be allowed to reopen after June 1 on the condition that thorough anti-virus measures are taken.
