Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has expressed hope that a new economic framework will be created to deepen ties with the United States. Tsai made the remark during her meeting with visiting US Senator Tammy Duckworth in Taipei on Tuesday. Tsai said Taiwan will keep expressing its willingness to participate in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, or IPEF -- a new US-led initiative apparently aimed at competing with China. US President Joe Biden on a visit to Japan last week revealed plans to start talks aimed at launching the framework. Taiwan was not included in the roster of IPEF members despite its lobbying efforts. Tsai told Duckworth that in the near future, she looks forward to Taiwan and the US taking steps to develop concrete plans to further strengthen the economic partnership. On May 20, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai's office announced that she met with the Taiwanese minister in charge of trade negotiations, Deng Chen-chung. The office said they agreed to look for specific measures to deepen bilateral ties in trade and investment, and that they also agreed to meet again several weeks hence.
