K-pop supergroup BTS sat down with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday to talk about the recent surge in anti-Asian hate crimes in the United States. The White House posted an edited video of the private meeting on Twitter. Biden cited discrimination that Asian Americans have faced. He said, "Hate only hides. When good people talk about it and say how bad it is, it goes down." BTS group member RM responded by thanking Biden for actions such as signing the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act into law. The legislation was in response to a rapid rise in violence targeting Asian Americans during the pandemic. The law increased police training and raised public awareness, but human rights groups have called for more drastic action. Ahead of their Oval Office meeting, the singers addressed reporters without taking any questions. BTS group member Park Ji-min said, "We were devastated by the recent surge of hate crimes including those against Asian-Americans. To put a stop on this and support the cause, we'd like to take this opportunity to raise our voices once again." Group member V said, "We hope today is one step forward to respecting and understanding each and every person as valuable." The K-pop stars have a so-called "army" of active, online supporters. Two years ago, BTS called on them to support the Black Lives Matter movement, and fans responded by raising a million dollars in donations in just one day.
