High-speed train derails in inland China, killing driver NHK

A high-speed train has derailed in China's inland province of Guizhou, killing the driver and injuring eight other people.

The state-run China Central Television says the 8-car train was headed for Guangzhou in the southern province of Guangdong on Saturday morning after it departed from Guiyang in Guizhou Province.

The train was approaching a station when it hit debris from a landslide and derailed.

Footage posted on social media by Chinese authorities shows part of the derailed front car on the station platform.

It also shows the largely damaged driver's cab and rescue workers assisting the passengers.

The state-run Xinhua news agency says one car attendant and seven passengers were injured. More than 130 other passengers were safely evacuated from the train.

Chinese media quote local officials as saying a mudslide from a mountain flowed onto the rail track. Rain had fallen intermittently in the area.

In 2020, one person was killed and more than 120 were injured when a train hit a landslide and derailed elsewhere in China.
