Ukraine has missed out on qualifying for this year's FIFA World Cup by losing 0-1 to Wales in the European playoff final. Ukraine's players were given a warm welcome when they appeared on the field of Cardiff City Stadium in Wales on Sunday with their country's flag draped upon their shoulders. Ukraine mostly controlled the ball from the first half on, creating opportunities to score. But Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey made a series of crucial saves. The only goal came in the 34th minute when Ukraine forward Andriy Yarmolenko inadvertently headed the ball into his own net while trying to clear a free kick by Wales captain Gareth Bale. The home crowd was euphoric as Wales qualified for its first World Cup since 1958. It will compete in Group B, which includes England, the United States and Iran. Ukraine hasn't qualified for the World Cup since 2006. Sunday's match was delayed for more than two months due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
