NATO military committee chief to visit Japan NHK

The chief of NATO's military committee is set to visit Japan. Admiral Rob Bauer is expected to discuss ways to deepen cooperation with Japan.

During his two-day visit starting Tuesday, Bauer will meet with Japanese Defense Minister Kishi Nobuo and General Yamazaki Koji, chief of Joint Staff of Japan's Self-Defense Forces.

Bauer is in a position to give military advice to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

His visit comes at a time when the NATO military alliance is busy responding to the Russian attack on Ukraine.

NATO believes strategic competition with Russia and China will intensify.

NATO wants to strengthen cooperation with four nations in the Asia-Pacific region -- Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

Bauer said in May that those four nations have a lot of similarities with NATO members when it comes to the challenges they face, and they can learn from each other.
