A museum displaying artifacts from Beijing's Palace Museum will open in Hong Kong next month to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the territory's handover to China. The Hong Kong Palace Museum will open on July 2 on the Kowloon Peninsula. The building has nine galleries and seminar rooms. The museum will exhibit over 900 relics of Chinese dynasties, including national treasures. The new cultural institution is expected to become a tourist attraction. When Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the museum's construction site in 2017, he expressed hope that traditional Chinese culture will be promoted in Hong Kong. The Chinese government is believed to be hoping that the museum will help build a strong Chinese identity among Hong Kong citizens. Hong Kong will mark 25 years since its handover from Britain on July 1, when the territory's new chief executive will take office. Attention is on whether Xi will attend related events.
