The United States has decided on an arms sale to Taiwan that would supply parts for ships and related technical assistance worth around 120 million dollars, in a show of its commitment to help improve its naval defense capabilities. The Biden Administration announced on Wednesday that it had notified Congress of the proposed sale. The US Defense Department said that the proposed deal will strengthen Taiwan's security and contribute to maintaining political stability and military balance in the region. It added that the sale will enhance Taiwan's ability to meet current and future threats. The proposed sale followed US President Joe Bien's comments last month that indicated the US would be willing to intervene militarily to defend Taiwan. Recently, China has been stepping up military pressure on Taiwan, sending fighter jets into Taiwan's air defense identification zone, and deploying the aircraft carrier Liaoning to the sea near Taiwan. A spokesperson for Taiwan's foreign ministry welcomed the proposed sale at a news conference on Thursday. Spokesperson Joanne Ou pointed out this is the third time this year that the Biden Administration has approved a sale of weapons to Taiwan. She said this shows the great importance that the US government attaches on meeting Taiwan's defense demand. She said it represents the continuation of a US policy of normalizing weapons sales to Taiwan. Taiwan's defense ministry also expressed appreciation. It stated that, in view of the recent frequent activities of Chinese military in the sea and airspace around Taiwan, the ship parts that the United Sates has agreed to sell will help maintain Taiwan's naval equipment and meet the actual needs of its combat readiness. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian strongly condemned the planned US sale to Taiwan during a news conference on Thursday. He said that US arms sales to Taiwan are a gross violation of the principle of "one China" and will seriously undermine China-US relations and the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait. Zhao went on to say that China will firmly take strong measures in order to defend its sovereignty and national security interests.
