Hydrangeas in full bloom at Chiba temple NHK

Hydrangea flowers are in full bloom at a temple near Tokyo.

The Nichiunji temple in Chiba Prefecture has about 20,000 hydrangea plants in its compound.

The temple says the flowers began blooming in early June, about a week later than usual due to low temperatures.

The temple says the number of visitors has been gradually increasing this year after a drop over the past two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The blue, purple and white colors of the flowers make a stunning contrast with the temple's vermillion gate.

A woman in her 60s said it is her first visit to the temple and the calm atmosphere is wonderful.

A couple in their 30s said the hydrangea flowers are more colorful than expected and beautiful.

The blossoms can be enjoyed until around July 10.
