Heavy fighting is continuing in eastern Ukraine as Russian forces aim to take the control of the key city of Severodonetsk in the Luhansk region.

Russia's defense ministry said on Monday its forces attacked Ukrainian troops and weapons in Luhansk and Donetsk. It also said its missile struck an airfield in Odesa in the south, destroying drones.

The ministry earlier said its troops and pro-Russian forces had seized a village on the outskirts of Severodonetsk.

But the Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank, said on Sunday that Russian troops in the city had made few gains.

Its assessment said, "Concentrated Russian artillery power paired with likely understrength infantry units remains insufficient to enable Russian advances within Severodonetsk."

Meanwhile, Ukraine's parliament passed bills on Sunday to prohibit the import of publications from Russia and Belarus and to ban some Russian music from being performed or distributed in public places.

The bills are expected to be signed into law by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
