Russian forces are expected to intensify their advance on the city of Lysychansk after declaring the seizure of neighboring Severodonetsk. This would allow them to win full control of the eastern-most region of Luhansk.
Britain's Defense Ministry pointed out on Sunday that capturing Severodonetsk was an important outcome for Russian forces during the recent fighting.
However, the ministry says it is only one of several challenging objectives Russia will need to achieve to occupy the whole of the Donbas region.
In a social media comment posted on Sunday, Luhansk Governor Serhiy Haidai says, " Lysychansk suffers from air strikes. Russians gain foothold in Severodonetsk nearby villages. After the capture of Severodonetsk, the enemy concentrated all its forces and means on occupying Lysychansk."
Russia's Defense Ministry released footage, which it said was taken on Sunday when Minister Sergei Shoigu visited command bases involved in relevant military operations.
The ministry didn't reveal exactly which locations Shoigu had visited. It says he was briefed on the situations in key areas where operations have been taking place.
Shoigu's visit is seen as a morale booster for Russian soldiers.
In a video clip released on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed to win back all the cities that Russian forces have taken control of, after the key eastern city of Severodonetsk became fully occupied.
