Biden: US to enhance military presence in Europe NHK

US President Joe Biden says his country is enhancing its military presence in Europe for the long haul following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Biden announced the plan at the NATO summit in Madrid on Wednesday.

Biden said the US military is establishing a new permanent headquarters in Poland to strengthen interoperability with NATO. It will be the first permanent basing of US forces in Eastern Europe.

The president also said the US is stepping up its rotational deployments of troops, including special operation forces, to the Baltic region.

Biden added that the US will increase the number of destroyers deployed in Spain from four to six and send two additional F-35 fighter jet squadrons to Britain.

The US currently has over 100,000 troops stationed across Europe, up by about 20,000 since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine about four months ago.
