Regulators in the Philippines have ordered the closure of a news website co-founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa. The Securities and Exchange Commission announced the ruling revoking Rappler's certificates of incorporation on Tuesday. It said the site had violated foreign equity restrictions on domestic media. Ressa last year became the first person from the Philippines to win a Nobel Prize in recognition of her efforts to safeguard the freedom of the press. She has pledged to fight the decision, calling it "intimidation". Ressa said, "We will continue to do our jobs. Our reporters will continue to hold the line, will continue to report, and will continue to demand that access is there." Rappler is known for its critical reporting of the administration of outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte, including its hardline war on drugs. The move comes as the country's new president is set to take office on Thursday. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who is the son of an ousted dictator, will take his oath. Duterte's daughter, Sara will serve as his vice president.
