A rain front and a low-pressure system are bringing heavy rain to northern Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency says warm, damp air flowing from the south into a front near Hokkaido is causing rain to linger in northern Japan. In Hokkaido, rain intensified in the early morning, causing the collapse of a river embankment in Asahikawa City and flooding. The town of Imakane had 124.5 millimeters of rain in the 24 hours through Wednesday, while Asahikawa City had 79.5 millimeters -- records for the month of June. Rain intensified again in the evening, with 31.5 millimeters falling in the town of Setana in an hour through 5 p.m. Localized rain clouds could develop and bring downpours through Thursday morning in parts of Hokkaido. The Hokkaido and Tohoku regions could receive up to 100 millimeters of rain in the 24 hours through Thursday evening. Weather officials are warning against mudslides and flooding.
