Joko meets Putin in Russia NHK

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the current chair of the Group of 20 nations, has met with the Russian President amid the invasion of Ukraine in an apparent bid to steer the G20 summit to success.

Joko met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday. The Indonesian leader held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on the previous day, and again invited him to the G20 summit.

Putin is believed to be trying to increase his presence by meeting with the chair of G20, whose members include nations considered friendly to Russia, such as China and India.

Western countries are calling for Putin to be excluded from the G20 summit, which is scheduled for November on the Indonesian island of Bali.

The Group of Seven nations and NATO have recently held summits to deepen their discussions on how to deal with Russia over the invasion.
