NATO leaders have wrapped up their summit in Madrid, with a renewed commitment to defend both member states and their partners. They say that commitment extends far beyond the North Atlantic. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, "Both Moscow and Beijing are using economic leverage, coercion and hybrid approaches to advance their interest in the region." Stoltenberg also said, "So today we discussed how to address this growing challenge including with even more support for NATO's partners in the region." Russia was once a strategic partner of NATO. Now, the organization calls Moscow its "most significant and direct threat." The leaders agreed to provide long term support to Ukraine, as well as allow Finland and Sweden to become new members. The NATO secretary general also acknowledged the impact the Russian invasion, and its blockade of Ukrainian grain shipments, has had on global food supplies. Meanwhile, Russia's grip on key Black Sea ports may be loosening. Moscow says it has withdrawn troops from Snake Island, a strategic outpost off the coast of Odesa. The defense ministry said the move shows Russia is not impeding UN efforts to organize a humanitarian corridor for the export of Ukraine's agricultural products. On social media, Ukraine's presidential office suggested Ukrainian troops have moved to retake the island, over four months after it was seized by Russian forces.
