The son and namesake of ousted Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos has been sworn in as president, praising the legacies of his father and outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. took the oath on Thursday in a ceremony at the National Museum in Manila. Foreign dignitaries present included Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa and Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan. Marcos Jr. said in his inauguration speech that his father built more and better roads and produced more rice than all administrations before his. He also said Duterte "built more and better" than all the administrations succeeding his father's. The new president expressed intent to continue Duterte's infrastructure projects and contribute to the country's economic development. He also stressed that he is resolved to boost the country's food self-sufficiency rate. Earlier, Marcos announced that he named himself minister of agriculture in response to rising food prices resulting from the situation in Ukraine. His father is said to have achieved success in improving infrastructure and agriculture sectors during his early rule.
