Demonstrations in Libya against political deadlock between rival governments and poor living conditions boiled over into violence on Friday as some protestors stormed a parliament building and threw rocks. The North African nation has been split into rival eastern and western factions since former leader Muammar al-Qadhafi was ousted in the 2011 Arab Spring uprising. The sides finally reached a ceasefire in 2020. A presidential election designed to unite the country was due to be held last December, but was postponed over disagreements between the factions. An attempt by the United Nations this week to mediate an agreement between them fell short. In the capital Tripoli, protesters demanded the election take place, while in the eastern city of Tobruk, demonstrators set fire to the parliament building. Many people were also protesting poor living conditions, which have been exacerbated by chronic power outages.
