Ohio Black man killed in police shooting sustained over 60 gunshot wounds NHK

Protests have erupted in the US state of Ohio after a Black man killed in a police shooting last month was found to have sustained more than 60 gunshot wounds.

Police in Akron on Sunday released body-camera footage of the June 27 incident in which Jayland Walker was killed in a hail of gunfire from police officers who were chasing him on foot.

Police said Walker was asked by them to stop for an alleged traffic violation, but he fled in his car and then on foot.

Police said Walker fired a shot from his vehicle during a car chase that preceded the pursuit on foot. But officials said he was unarmed at the moment of the police shooting.

Police said the eight officers have been placed on administrative leave. An investigation into the shooting is underway.

In the wake of the shooting, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of the Akron, holding placards that read "Black Lives Matter."

In 2020, the police killing of a Black man triggered massive protests against racial injustice across the country.
