G20 foreign ministers gather in Bali for talks overshadowed by Ukraine conflict NHK

Foreign ministers of the Group of 20 nations have gathered in Indonesia to discuss issues including global food security and surging energy prices at a meeting overshadowed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

It is the first G20 foreign ministerial meeting since the start of the conflict. Discussions are set to begin on the island of Bali on Friday.

Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa is likely to argue that the invasion clearly violates international law. He is expected to reiterate the importance of the rule of law, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Hayashi is also likely to join diplomats from G7 and other nations in stating that Russia is largely to blame for the current global food crisis.

They are expected to say Ukraine has been unable to export grains because of the invasion. The country is one of the world's largest exporters of wheat, corn and other grains.

Hayashi is also likely to highlight the need for international cooperation in tackling global challenges.

He is expected to outline Japan's efforts to that end, such as providing roughly 200 million dollars' worth of food aid to Ukraine, the Middle East and Africa, as well as facilitating greater use of renewable energy in developing nations.

Hayashi and other G7 diplomats were absent from the welcome dinner hosted by the Indonesian government on Thursday.

Japanese government officials say the G7 diplomats had agreed to skip the reception after deciding that it would be inappropriate for them to attend a social event at which Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov would be present.
