Matsuno confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody.
He also said Abe's condition is unclear and that officials are collecting information.
Matsuno went on to say that such a barbaric act is totally unacceptable, and that the government firmly condemns it. He said that the government will take all possible measures to deal with the situation.
Matsuno also said Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has been informed of the situation and is scheduled to return to the Prime Minister's Office immediately.
