Chinese President Xi Jinping has offered condolences to Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio over the passing of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.
China's foreign ministry says Xi sent a telegram of condolence to Kishida on Saturday.
Xi said in the telegram that Abe made efforts to promote bilateral ties and positive contributions while prime minister. Xi said he is deeply saddened to learn of Abe's sudden death, and feels great regret.
Xi said he is willing to continue working with Kishida to develop friendly and cooperative ties in accordance with the principles set out in political documents agreed on between the two countries.
