Russia has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution to renew cross-border humanitarian operations for northwestern Syria. The draft resolution was intended to provide a one-year extension for the route used to transport food and medicine for people displaced in Syria's civil war, which has raged for more than a decade. The land route connects neighboring Turkey to northwestern Syria, where many are living in camps. The resolution was rejected on Friday. Thirteen members of the council voted in favor, but Russia cast a veto. China abstained. Russia is a supporter of the administration of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Moscow insists that humanitarian assistance should be provided through the Assad administration, not via the route set by the United Nations. Russia's competing draft, which called for an extension limited to six months, was also voted down. Russia and China supported it, but the United States, Britain and France opposed. The other 10 countries abstained. The votes highlight the divide in the council between Russia and Western nations, which are deeply at odds over Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Council members say they will continue negotiating, but time is running out as the current resolution for cross-border aid is set to expire on Sunday.
