Air travelers in Japan heading overseas can expect to pay more for their tickets in coming months. The country's two major airlines are planning to hike their fuel surcharges, blaming surging costs. The higher fees will kick in for tickets sold in August and September. The carriers review the charges every two months. Surcharges for routes linking Japan with Europe and North America are expected to rise to their highest levels on record. The fee for a one-way fare on All Nippon Airways will be hiked by 11,600 yen to 49,000 yen. That's about 360 dollars. Passengers on Japan Airlines will pay 10,200 yen more to 47,000 yen, or nearly 345 dollars. The carriers say higher crude-oil prices and a weaker yen are pushing up the cost of jet fuel. Travel industry officials are warning that the soaring prices may put a drag on demand. Passengers in Japan are starting to return to the skies, now that pandemic-era border controls have been eased around the world.
