Tokyo reports 6,231 new coronavirus cases, more than double from a week ago NHK

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 6,231 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday, more than twice as many as a week ago.

The figure is up 3,459 from last Monday.

It's the 24th straight day of week-on-week increases and the seventh consecutive day that the daily tally has more than doubled from a week earlier.

The number of seriously ill patients on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines in Tokyo is nine, down one from Sunday.

Meanwhile, authorities across Japan reported 37,143 new infections and 15 deaths as of 6:20 p.m. on Monday.

The health ministry says the number of seriously ill coronavirus patients, including those on ventilators, ECMO machines, or in intensive care units, stood at 75 as of Monday.

The figure is down five from the previous day.
