Wake of former Prime Minister Abe held at Tokyo temple NHK

A wake for former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo was held at a temple in Tokyo Monday evening.

Abe was fatally shot while delivering a campaign speech in the city of Nara in western Japan on Friday.

His body was returned to his residence in Tokyo on Saturday.

A vehicle carrying his casket arrived at Zojoji Temple Monday afternoon.

The wake began at 6 PM. Mourners offering incense to the slain politician included Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and his predecessor Suga Yoshihide. Secretary General of the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party Motegi Toshimitsu and opposition Democratic Party for the People President Tamaki Yuichiro were also in attendance.

A funeral service to be held on Tuesday will be attended by members of Abe's family and close contacts.

A farewell ceremony is to take place on a later date.
