India's government officials have confirmed the country's first case of monkeypox. The health ministry said Thursday a 35-year-old man who had traveled to the United Arab Emirates was infected with the virus. The ministry said the man has been isolated at a hospital since he returned to the southern state of Kerala earlier this week. Eleven passengers on board the same plane with him have been told to watch for symptoms. The government said it sent a high-level team to the state to work with local authorities to investigate any outbreak. Monkeypox is endemic in parts of Africa. Its symptoms include fever, intense headache, swollen lymph nodes and skin lesions. The WHO says over 9,000 cases have been confirmed in recent months in around 60 countries.
