Heavy rain is expected in western and eastern Japan through late Saturday and Sunday. The Japan Meteorological Agency is calling on people to be cautious of mudslides, rising rivers and flooding in low-lying areas. The agency says atmospheric conditions will remain unstable through Sunday in western and eastern Japan due to a stationary rain front and a low-pressure system over the Japanese archipelago. Radar data show an estimated 100 millimeters of rain fell in the town of Okinoshima, Shimane Prefecture, in western Japan in one hour up to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The town of Kagamino in Okayama Prefecture in western Japan had an estimated 110 millimeters of rain in one hour up to 4:50 p.m. on the same day. The rain front is expected to stay around the archipelago on Sunday, causing atmospheric conditions to remain unstable in wide areas from Hokkaido in northern Japan to the Chugoku region in western Japan. Heavy rains of over 50 millimeters per hour are expected in the Chugoku and Kinki regions in western Japan up to late Saturday night, and in the Tokai and Kanto regions in central and eastern Japan from late Saturday night to early Sunday morning. The amount of rainfall during the 24-hour period through Sunday evening is expected to be up to 150 millimeters in the Tokai region, the Izu Islands and Hokkaido. There is expected to be 120 millimeters in the Kanto-Koshin region, and 100 millimeters in the Tohoku region in northern Japan, the Hokuriku region in central Japan and the Kinki region in western Japan. There is expected to be 80 millimeters in the Chugoku region. The amount of rainfall during the 24-hour period through Monday evening is expected to reach 50 to 100 millimeters in the Tohoku region and Hokkaido.
