The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says it confirmed 17,790 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday. The figure is up 8,308 from a week ago, or 1.88 times the total of last Sunday. The daily tally in the capital topped 10,000 for the sixth consecutive day. The seven-day average of the daily count through Sunday came to 15,292.9. That was 202.3 percent of the number from a week earlier. Tokyo officials say there are 13 seriously ill patients on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines, down one from Saturday. They also reported one death from the virus. Health authorities across Japan reported a total of 105,584 new cases on Sunday. The nationwide daily tally topped 100,000 for the third consecutive day.
