The soothing noise of wind chimes has been welcoming visitors to a shrine in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo. The chimes feature locally made metal bells. About 500 of the chimes are on display on the precinct and paths of Karasawayama Shrine in Sano City. They are said to offer a sense of relief from the summer heat. The chimes are made using the prefecture's traditional metal-casting, known as "Tenmyo-imono." The craft is said to date back more than 1,000 years. The shrine has four varieties of chime -- gold, silver, bronze, and a strawberry motif. The fruit is a specialty of the prefecture. The city saw a record-high temperature of 39.9 degrees Celsius on July 1. A shrine representative said she hopes visitors can feel relaxed by the calming sounds amid the heat. The chimes can be enjoyed through August 28.
