European leaders have criticized their Russian counterparts for "weaponizing" energy. They've tried to cut their reliance and have turned elsewhere for help. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen headed to Baku, Azerbaijan on Monday to ensure the flow of gas. Europeans already receive supplies through a route stretching from the Caspian Sea. Von der Leyen signed an agreement with President Ilham Aliyev to double imports by 2027. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to Paris. They agreed to cooperate on the delivery of oil and natural gas. Their foreign ministers signed a deal to identify joint investment projects in hydrogen, renewable, and nuclear energy. Italy's Prime Minister Mario Draghi traveled to Algeria to secure additional supplies. He and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune approved a gas deal worth 4 billion dollars. The agreement will help reassure Italians who fear supplies from Russia will be cut off.
