Tokyo reports 11,018 coronavirus cases on Tuesday NHK

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 11,018 new cases of the coronavirus on Tuesday.

The figure was down 493 from a week ago, but topped 10,000 for the eighth straight day.

The number of seriously ill patients on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines in Tokyo was 19, up 4 from Monday.

Tokyo officials said the occupancy rate for hospital beds allocated for coronavirus patients stood at 40.5 percent on Tuesday based on preliminary reports. The rate was 18.9 percent on July 1.

Tokyo increased the number of the beds by 2,000 to about 7,000 this month.

The occupancy rate rose to about 60 percent in February during the sixth infection wave.
