Japan's government has decided to shorten the isolation period for people who come into close contact with those infected with the coronavirus.

The decision made on Friday is aimed at keeping social and economic activities running, amid a rapid spread of infections nationwide.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio discussed the government's response with health minister Goto Shigeyuki and minister in charge of coronavirus measures Yamagiwa Daishiro.

They agreed that starting on July 22, close contacts can end their self-isolation in five days instead of seven in principle, or even on the third day if antigen tests come back negative that day and the previous one.

The government will also help fever clinics distribute antigen test kits to people with symptoms for use beforehand, to ease the massive load on outpatient services.

Arrangements will be made to allow people who test positive at home to contact municipal offices manned by doctors, and have their health conditions monitored.

The government's financial assistance to medical institutions will be extended until the end of September for programs that expire this month.

Health minister Goto told reporters that preparations will be made with an eye toward delivering an Omicron-specific vaccine to the public, starting as early as the coming autumn.

The vaccine, now under development, is based on existing shots but will be modified to be more effective against the Omicron variant.

Goto said the government will go all-out to protect the elderly who are at higher risk of falling gravely ill, while keeping society and the economy open as much as possible.

He reminded the public to follow basic anti-infection measures -- such as wearing masks appropriately, washing hands, ensuring ventilation, and avoiding enclosed and crowded settings.
