Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says Moscow has signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations that will help withdraw restrictions on Russian exports of agricultural products. Lavrov said in a statement on Friday that the deal came earlier in the day at the same signing ceremony for a separate agreement between Moscow and Kyiv that allows Ukraine to resume grain exports from Black Sea ports. He said the deal on exports of Russian agricultural products was inked by Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Belousov and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Lavrov said the memorandum is aimed at ensuring "transparent and unhindered shipments of Russian food and fertilisers, including the raw materials for their production, to international markets." He added, "In particular, this issue is about removing the obstacles that the US and the EU have created in finance, insurance and logistics and exempting these particular products from the restrictive measures imposed on Russia." Russia's Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu also announced on Friday that Russia had signed the two deals. He said the two documents are interconnected and that the memorandum will clear the way for resuming Russian exports of agricultural products. Shoigu also said the signing of the agreement on Ukraine's grain exports was made possible through mediation by Turkey and the United Nations. He added that he hopes the deal will help to ensure global food security. Ukraine is one of the world's top exporters of grains, such as wheat and corn. It has been unable to export huge amounts of harvested crops due largely to a Russian blockade of Black Sea ports. The blockage has impacted the global food supply chain and driven up prices.
