An NHK survey shows that nearly half of Japanese sports associations that took part in last year's Tokyo Olympics expect their revenue to fall this fiscal year, compared to before the Games. NHK conducted a survey of 35 sports associations that participated in the Tokyo Summer Games. All but one responded. Forty-four percent of respondents said their revenue in fiscal 2022 will likely be lower than before the Olympics. Thirty-eight percent expect their revenue to remain unchanged, while 12 percent project it to increase. Most of the respondents who expect lower revenue attribute it to the termination of contracts with corporate sponsors. Many contracts were due to expire after the Games. One association has lost half of its eight sponsors. Some sponsors did not extend contracts because of poor business performances caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Some associations are being forced to review their strategy to help athletes develop after losing sponsors.
