South Korea and the United States are set to resume joint military field exercises in August. The move is apparently part of plans to normalize activities that were scaled back to promote dialogue with Pyongyang. South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup made the announcement on Friday after briefing President Yoon Suk-yeol on policy matters including North Korea. The decision to expand the scope and scale of the drills came at a summit in May between Yoon and US President Joe Biden. They were scaled back under the administrations of their predecessors. Lee said the activities in August will include both field training and computer-simulated exercises.
