The Japan Meteorological Agency has raised the volcanic alert to the highest level of five for Sakurajima in Kagoshima Prefecture following an explosive eruption on Sunday evening. The agency says the eruption occurred at 8:05 p.m. and large volcanic rocks flew 2.5 kilometers from the crater. The agency is calling on people within 3 kilometers from the Minamidake crater to watch out for large rocks. The zone includes the Arimura and Furusato districts in Kagoshima City. The agency is also calling for caution against pyroclastic flows within a 2-kilometer radius.
