A wildfire in the western US state of California has spread, prompting the declaration of a state of emergency and evacuation orders. State authorities say the blaze started near Yosemite National Park on Friday afternoon and had burned roughly 48 square kilometers by Saturday. Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency on Saturday. The Associated Press and other media outlets report that evacuation orders are in effect for more than 6,000 people. Yosemite Park is home to groves of giant sequoias, trees that are believed to live over 2,000 years. The tree species is classified as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List for Threatened Species. The US government says only a small number of giant sequoia groves remain intact after massive wildfires in recent years.
