Tunisians have voted in a referendum on a new constitution that would increase the power of President Kais Saied. The proposed constitution, which was put on the referendum on Monday, says the president can appoint a prime minister without parliamentary approval, for example. President Saied has taken steps to tighten his grip on power, including sacking the prime minister and suspending parliament in July of last year. He said the actions were necessary to pull the country out of political and economic turmoil. Saied's attempt to rewrite the constitution has drawn criticism from opposition parties and unions and prompted some to boycott the vote. Critics said the action runs counter to the spirit of the 2011 "Arab Spring" pro-democracy movement. The results are expected to become clear on Tuesday.
