Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has given new responsibilities to his Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hagiuda Koichi, who will be empowered to boost a green transformation.
Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara Seiji announced on Wednesday that Kishida added "GX minister" to Hagiuda's portfolio of duties toward achieving Japan's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
Hagiuda will be tasked with promoting measures to revamp the country's economic, social and industrial structures toward de-carbonization.
Kishida and Hagiuda attended the first meeting of the green transformation council on Wednesday.
Kihara said that in addition to aiming for carbon neutrality, the council will keep an eye on how shifts in the system of energy supply and demand and in the industrial structure would impact economic development and growth.
